Fetal Medicine Clinic

During pregnancy, the fetus is surrounded by amniotic fluid, a substance very similar to water. Amniotic fluid contains living fetal cells and other substances, such as alpha-fetoprotein (AFP).

What is amniocentesis?

Amniocentesis is a prenatal test in which a small amount of amniotic fluid is removed from the sac surrounding the fetus for testing. A sample of amniotic fluid (less than one ounce) is removed through a fine needle that is inserted into the uterus through the abdomen, under ultrasound guidance.

This is done in special cases, including:

If you have an abnormal ultrasound examination or abnormal laboratory screens

You have a family history of certain birth defects

You have previously given birth to a child or become pregnant with a birth defect

The genetic test result was abnormal in the current pregnancy

Chorionic villus sampling (CVS)

It is a prenatal test used to detect birth defects, genetic diseases and other problems during pregnancy.

You may be asked to have a CVS if you have certain risk factors for having a baby with a birth defect or genetic disease, so that problems can be detected early in pregnancy.

How is it implemented?

During the test, a small sample of cells (called chorionic villi) is taken from the placenta where it attaches to the wall of the uterus by applying local anesthesia to the abdomen. The time required for this procedure is about a few minutes. Chorionic villi are small parts of the placenta that form from the fertilized egg, so they carry the same genes as the baby.

When is CVS implemented?

We perform the test in the eleventh week of pregnancy as the latest studies have shown that if done early it will lead to deformities of the toes and fingers.

What to expect after the operation?

The majority of women do not have any side effects, but they may suffer from some cramps in the lower abdomen similar to menstrual pain, and sometimes vaginal bleeding. You may receive paracetamol to relieve pain.

When will you get your test results?

For major anomalies such as Down syndrome. Mohamedomi Results will be available within three days of testing, but minor anomalies take longer, up to 3 weeks.

You will receive a phone call from Dr. Muhammad’s clinics to schedule a meeting with parents to discuss the test results

It is important to seek urgent advice if you are diagnosed with fetal obstructive uropathy,

It is the presence of a blockage in the fetal urinary tract, which leads to a decrease in the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the child, which leads to pressure on the fetus’s lungs, making them unable to breathe after birth.

It also causes back pressure on the fetus’s kidneys and destroys them.

In this case, we insert a fetal catheter into the uterus to withdraw the accumulated urine to save the fetus’s kidneys

This procedure is considered the only solution to save twins who share the same placenta and there is an abnormal connection of blood vessels between them, which leads to more blood passing to one of the twins, causing fetal edema and heart failure, while the other fetus becomes anemic, and the fetus may develop anemia. death.

Dr. Muhammad diagnoses this condition early in pregnancy, in the fourth month of pregnancy, by using a very small telescope-like endoscope that passes through your abdomen and then through the uterine wall and uses a laser beam to destroy this connection between the fetal blood circulation

Some fetuses suffer from an increase in the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding them while they are inside the uterine cavity.

This condition occurs more often in women with diabetes and sometimes has no specific cause.

This may lead to premature rupture of the membranes and other complications.

Dr. Muhammad treats this condition by withdrawing some excess fluid over several sessions to relieve the mother’s symptoms. This is done through ultrasound evidence and is followed by ensuring the health of the fetus

Some fetuses may suffer from obstruction in urine flow, which leads to a decrease in the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding them, which negatively affects the health of the fetus, including lung development.

This condition is usually diagnosed during the second trimester of pregnancy.

Dr. Muhammad performs amniotic fluid injection in these cases by injecting sufficient amounts of certain fluids to protect these children from developmental abnormalities such as adhesions that affect their limbs

Some women suffer from a condition known as Rh alloimmunization, which means there are antibodies within the mother’s blood that attack and destroy the fetal red blood cells.

This will flow due to fetal heart failure, fetal edema and jaundice.

This condition requires careful evaluation through specific ultrasound imaging to diagnose the presence and degree of anemia in the fetus.

In these cases, Dr. Muhammad performs a blood transfusion to these fetuses while they are still inside the uterus to save them from the harmful effects of fetal anemia
